Shawn "swyx" Wang
Founder and CEO, Latent Space; also works at Cognition
From finance to developer experience
Shawn Wang, known as swyx, is a developer, writer and community builder based in San Francisco[1]. The name swyx comes from the initials of his English and Chinese names[1]. He grew up in Singapore and has worked mostly in the US and UK[1].
Before working in software, Wang was a currency options trader and then a technology, media and telecom hedge fund analyst[1]. His developer experience work took him through Netlify, Amazon Web Services, Temporal and Airbyte[1]. He helped run the React subreddit and grow the Svelte Society community[1]. He wrote the essay Learn in Public and The Coding Career Handbook, a collection of nontechnical advice for developers moving from junior to senior roles that is now free and open source[1].
Latent Space and The Rise of the AI Engineer
Wang started the Latent Space newsletter in 2022 to make sense of the emerging field of AI engineering[2]. A podcast followed in 2023, with Alessio Fanelli as its founding co-host[2]. Latent Space describes itself as a publication, podcast and community for people turning AI research into working software, and lists Wang as its founder and CEO[2]. Its community runs a weekly LLM Paper Club[2].
On 30 June 2023 Latent Space published The Rise of the AI Engineer[3]. The essay argued that tasks which took five years and a research team in 2013 now needed only API documentation and a spare afternoon, because of the capabilities and availability of foundation models[3]. It described a new role, the AI engineer, who builds products on top of foundation models and treats product-specific data and evaluations as part of the job[3]. Latent Space calls this the essay behind its focus[2].
AI Engineer conferences
In the same essay Wang announced the AI Engineer Summit, which he described as an independently run, builder-oriented AI conference, organised with Ben Dunphy of Reactathon[3]. AI Engineer now hosts AI developer conferences around the world for engineers, startup founders and AI architects[4]. Its schedule includes an AI Engineer Code Summit in San Francisco on 10 to 12 November 2026 focused on coding agents and development tools, AI Engineer Europe in London in February 2027, and a World's Fair at Moscone West in San Francisco in 2027[4]. Independently organised partner conferences also run under the AI Engineer name in other cities[4].
Wang's own site lists Latent Space, AI Engineer and Cognition as the three places where most of his work happens[1][5].
Smol AI and joining Cognition
In a January 2025 bio on his site, Wang was described as editor of Latent Space and founder of Smol AI, an LLM data pipeline company that produced the AI News newsletter[1]. In September 2025 he wrote that he was joining Cognition, the maker of the Devin AI software engineer and owner of the Windsurf agentic IDE[6]. He wrote that most of Smol AI would join Cognition as part of the deal, while he would continue to work on AI Engineer and Latent Space independently of Cognition[6].
In that post he set out his reasons for the move, including his view that AI for code would arrive well before full artificial general intelligence and capture much of its value[6]. He also described a thesis he calls the rise of agent labs[6]. His now page, updated in August 2026, says he is still working on Latent Space, AI Engineer and Cognition from San Francisco[5]. He also invests in AI and developer-tool companies[1].
