Background

João Moura is a Brazilian technologist and the founder and CEO of CrewAI, a startup based in Silicon Valley[1]. Bloomberg Línea reported in October 2025 that he had more than 20 years of experience in the technology industry, much of it working remotely for American companies[1]. His GitHub profile says he previously worked at Clearbit, which was acquired by HubSpot[2].

Creating the crewAI framework

Moura created crewAI, an open-source framework for orchestrating role-playing, autonomous AI agents[2][3]. Its documentation describes CrewAI as a standalone Python framework with its own building blocks for agents, tasks, crews, flows, tools and orchestration[3]. Crews are teams of role-based agents that work together, while Flows are event-driven automations that combine precise workflow control, single model calls and native support for crews[3]. The repository had about 60,600 stars on GitHub when checked in November 2026[3]. It also states that more than 100,000 developers have been certified through CrewAI's community courses[3].

Moura teaches Multi AI Agent Systems with crewAI, a short course on DeepLearning.AI[4]. The course covers how to design a team of AI agents through natural language and use them to automate multi-step business processes[4]. It teaches the key parts of multi-agent systems: role-playing, memory, tools, focus, guardrails against errors and infinite loops, and cooperation between agents in series or in parallel[4].

Building CrewAI the company

CrewAI's commercial platform lets businesses build and orchestrate AI agents that carry out complex tasks with minimal human involvement[1]. Customers use it to automate work such as customer service and software development, and in finance, legal and marketing functions[1]. According to Bloomberg Línea, the company started 2025 with customers including PepsiCo, PwC, the US Department of Defense and the Royal Bank of Canada[1].

At the end of 2024 CrewAI announced a $12.5 million Series A round led by Insight Partners[1]. Other investors included Alt Capital, Blitzscaling Ventures, Craft Ventures and Earl Grey Capital, along with angel investors Andrew Ng and Dharmesh Shah[1].

In his October 2025 interview with Bloomberg Línea, Moura said CrewAI was running more than 400 million agents a month[1]. He said the company's 2025 results would be more than ten times those of 2024, and that it planned to raise a new round in the first half of 2026[1]. He named IBM, PwC, AWS, Microsoft and Nvidia as partners[1]. He also said that, together with IBM, CrewAI had won a recent US Department of Defense bid, and that it was talking with the Army, the Navy and other government bodies[1].

Views on AI agents

Moura has compared the current period of AI agents to the early days of software as a service, but with a much faster pace of change[1]. He told Bloomberg Línea that he does not believe SaaS will die, and that he expects a transition in which some software layers are absorbed by agents while others remain[1]. He also said that the market was still working out what AI agents mean in practice[1].

In 2026 he was listed as a speaker at the Databricks Data + AI Summit, in a founder conversation on the open infrastructure behind AI agents, alongside Harrison Chase of LangChain and Jerry Liu of LlamaIndex[5].
