AI influencersAI leadersLists

When Stanford's AI Index team counted 2025's notable AI models, more than 90% came from industry rather than universities — a near-complete reversal of where AI leadership sat a decade ago. Influence in AI now sits inside companies: with the researchers who set lab agendas, the founders who decide what gets built, and the executives who choose what gets released. This list tracks those people — and what each of them actually did in the last year to earn their place on it.

The backdrop, from Stanford HAI's AI Index 2026: generative AI reached 53% population-level adoption within three years — faster than the PC or the internet — and global corporate AI investment doubled to $581.7B in 2025, with US private investment accounting for $285.9B of it. The accountability side has not kept pace: documented AI incidents rose to 362 in 2025, up from 233 in 2024, while the Foundation Model Transparency Index fell from 58 to 40. That gap is part of what this list measures.

How we picked them

Influence here means one of three things: you set the research agenda, you ship products that millions use, or your analysis reliably helps other people decide. Follower counts alone did not qualify anyone. The list is unranked within three groups — research, builders and founders, and voices worth your feed.

What changed since the original list

Three shifts stand out. First, agent builders — framework authors and AI engineers — now sit alongside lab leaders; the person whose library your agent runs on has more daily influence than most keynotes. Second, AI economists and safety researchers moved into the mainstream list as deployment questions became board questions. Third, the "influencer" label itself matters less: in 2027 the most valuable follows publish working code, evals and post-mortems, not hot takes.

Think we missed someone obvious? Nominate them — this list is reviewed quarterly, and our Innovators directory profiles builders and CX/AI leaders in more depth.

Frequently asked questions

How was this list of AI influencers compiled?

We judged influence three ways: setting the research agenda, shipping products that millions of people use, or publishing analysis that reliably helps others decide. Follower counts alone did not qualify anyone. The 55 entries are unranked and grouped into researchers, builders and founders, and voices worth following — so a framework author can sit alongside a lab director without implying one outranks the other.

What changed in the 2027 edition?

Five names joined, including Jensen Huang, Ilya Sutskever and Perplexity's Aravind Srinivas, and several long-standing entries changed jobs: Yann LeCun left Meta to co-found AMI Labs, Demis Hassabis became Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, and Andrej Karpathy joined Anthropic's pretraining team. Agent builders and AI economists also moved up as deployment questions became board-level questions.

How often is the list updated?

The list is reviewed every quarter. Entries are re-checked against current sources — roles, employers and what each person has actually shipped or published recently — and people are added or removed as the field moves. If you think someone obvious is missing, you can nominate them; nominations feed directly into the next quarterly review.

Where does AI influence sit now — universities or industry?

Overwhelmingly inside companies. Stanford HAI's AI Index 2026 counted 2025's notable AI models and found more than 90% came from industry rather than universities. Generative AI also reached 53% population-level adoption within three years — faster than the PC or the internet — which is why this list weights the researchers, founders and executives inside labs and companies so heavily.
